“In this environment, over the next two years we expect that bitcoin and other digital assets will trade significantly higher than the current all-time high,” Thorn said. “What was once an oppressive headwind in the world’s largest capital market will now shift to a tailwind, and no one is bullish enough.”

Ether and other cryptocurrencies, however, stand to gain much more from the crypto-friendly regulatory environment that Trump has promised and appears to be a priority for many in his inner circle. For example, one reason the spot bitcoin ETFs didn’t see as much success as bitcoin ETFs is because they don’t distribute staking rewards. Many in the industry are hopeful that will change next year.

Just as it took the dot-com bubble bursting in the early 2000s to hand over the future of the internet to more durable companies, business models and use cases, perhaps 2022 marks a handover of crypto technology and blockchain infrastructure to steadier hands.

The poll found that nearly four in five Americans (79%) feel there needs to be clearer regulation of cryptocurrency – with support from Democrats (87%) and Republicans (76%). Further, three-quarters of Americans (77%), including 83% of Democrats and 75% of Republicans, want the federal government to establish clear rules for cryptocurrency trading. Not only do Democrats and Republicans seem to agree on the overarching importance of cryptocurrency, they also agree on the need for regulation to ensure that cryptocurrency continues to be a safeviable investment option for American investors.

Ultimately, these results reveal that there is clear, broad bipartisan support for greater action in Washington to clarify and strengthen cryptocurrency rules and regulations, representing a rare opportunity for bipartisan efforts to succeed. The US has always been a leader in the global financial system, and its slow response to cryptocurrencies has threatened that position. While this poll is focused on Americans, there are broader takeaways here that policy-makers around the world should note: Crypto is here to stay, and is a topic that’s increasingly top of mind for future generations. The takeaways from this survey are a call to action to jurisdictions around the world. Governments need to act expeditiously to determine ways to support the continued growth of the crypto industry, while simultaneously protecting their citizens’ financial futures.

Their per-trade fees are quite good, though they do charge withdrawal fees unlike some other exchanges in this list, and because they are relatively new it’s impossible to give them a truly solid score on reputation and security, as they haven’t been around long enough yet to really be battle tested.

Coinberry is another excellent Canadian crypto exchange that offers a wide range of awesome services and features. The platform supports a range of cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin, Litecoin, Ethereum, Stellar, Bitcoin Cash and Ripple, and you can buy the crypto of your choice using credit cards, wire transfers, and Interac eTransfers. One of the best things about this platform is that it charges no fees on deposits and withdrawals. The only fee that you will need to pay is the 0.5% fee for trading, which makes it an affordable marketplace for both new and experienced Canadian crypto traders.

While KuCoin technically does not serve US customers on paper, they do not implement any KYC policies and generally have a somewhat openly stated ‘wink wink nudge nudge’ kind of philosophy about servicing places they technically shouldn’t.

Like the previous two options, OKEX’s passive income offering is via sending things out to mining/staking pools. I unfortunately couldn’t even find a listing of what pools they have available, leading me to believe the option may not even get any significant use. They supposedly offer staking services in-house for some coins as well, but I could find no detail on which ones or what the rates were.

The biggest Ethereum upgrade since The Merge, the Shanghai Upgrade will allow ETH stakers to unstake their ETH and withdraw ETH rewards from the Beacon Chain. During The Merge, the Ethereum proof-of-work chain merged with the proof-of-stake Beacon Chain. Instead of mining, validators stake 32 ETH to secure the network. However, stakers are unable to unstake and withdraw until the Shanghai Upgrade.

Ethereum’s own purported goal is to become a global platform for decentralized applications, allowing users from all over the world to write and run software that is resistant to censorship, downtime and fraud.

Bitcoin is becoming more political by the day, particularly after El Salvador began accepting the currency as legal tender. The country’s president, Nayib Bukele, announced and implemented the decision almost unilaterally, dismissing criticism from his citizens, the Bank of England, the IMF, Vitalik Buterin and many others. Since the Bitcoin legal tender law was passed in September 2021, Bukele has also announced plans to build Bitcoin City, a city fully based on mining Bitcoin with geothermal energy from volcanoes.

The news has produced commentary from tech entrepreneurs to environmental activists to political leaders alike. In May 2021, Tesla CEO Elon Musk even stated that Tesla would no longer accept the cryptocurrency as payment, due to his concern regarding its environmental footprint. Though many of these individuals have condemned this issue and move on, some have prompted solutions: how do we make Bitcoin more energy efficient? Others have simply taken the defensive position, stating that the Bitcoin energy problem may be exaggerated.
